"Terrible Drive operation" 2010-01-03By
G. LacyThis drive has the terrible habit of going to sleep and None of the suggestions offered by the manufacturer stop the drive from sleeping. So I'm constantly waiting for it to wake up. It is the worst aggravation throughout the day.
I'm currently trying to figure out a way to pull the HD out and put it into a different enclosure that isn't programmed to sleep.

I wish I had filmed what I have to say here. After months of dealing with maxtor/Seagate (they told me to buy disk repair software) and then trying to get the damn thing working again after I lost about 135 GB of iTunes, documents, and photos, I took the 750 GB version of this product out to the garage and used a sledgehammer on it. Very satisfying results. The only other positive thing I can say is that at least I bought it on clearance at a local office supply, which also refused any responsibility when it started to whisper its swan song and then went catatonic, and unrepairable. It is now in a landfill somewhere, in fifteen pieces, which is where yours will be, too, within six months of your buying this hunk of worthless junk. Another bit of advice: when worse comes to worst, use the biggest sledge you can manage. Mine is a twelve-pounder.

Look at how many bad reviews this drive has. It's loud. It goes to sleep. It won't wake up. Today it decided to go corrupt on me.
DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE IF YOU VALUE YOUR TIME, MONEY and DIGITAL ASSETS!!!
In fact, I am going to try and avoid Maxtor and Seagate (the parent company) as much as possible. I think they made a crap drive on purpose so they could trick people into having to use hundreds of dollars of their data recovery services.
This is the worst device I have ever connected to my Mac. I regret buying it.

Do not buy this Drive if you are using a 64 bit operating system. If you do, you won't be able to use any of the functions it promised you. A 64 bit system will only recognize this Drive as a plain Drive. I you setup any of its security features, it will not show in your computer. If you moved this Drive from a 32 bit system to a 64 bit you must first unlock its security features otherwise it won't work. Maxtor does not provide a solution to this problem, beware

Very upset with both this product & the after service support which basically stated that : It is broken. You are out of warranty & out of luck.
Do your research before you buy any of their stuff. I have other hard drives that work day in & day out .
