"Please Don't Buy" 2009-01-03By
Michael K. Lawrence (St. Croix, USVI)
I've never had a problem with Toshiba products which is why I purchased this drive. Unfortunately it is junk. I'm using rubber bands to hold it together. I would secure it permanently but I need access in order to realign the drive so I can plug in the interface cord. Very poor quality. I see now why it is unavailable.
"Works intermittently even after Toshiba repaired it" 2008-12-19By
Marian Burk Wood (www.woodwriters.com)
Other reviewers have commented on the clicking sound--it means the drive isn't reading or writing data correctly, as I found out the hard way. Also the drive sometimes loses its connection to the computer, often in the middle of data transfer. Toshiba repaired it under warranty and just a week later, the clicking and connection problems came back. This is the last time I'll buy a Toshiba hard drive, because I need reliable backup storage.
"Toshiba 200GB Portable" 2008-10-31By
Robert H. Yee (Mission Viejo, CA United States)
The Toshiba 200GB portable was a perfect backup drive. It is built very sturdy and does not need an external case to protect it. The drive does very fast downloads and the extra capacity ensures that the 30 GB of files can be saved multiple times.
"Toshiba hardware is good. NTI Shadow software is awful." 2008-10-28By
Aglio (Boston, MA)
I've been a big fan of Toshiba products for a very long time. So, using previous purchases as my guide, I bought this unit to back up my files.
In the first week, I was very happy with the unit since it worked exactly as promised. I installed the NTI Shadow software and did a handful of back ups successfully.
However, after a month or so of use, I started having problems with the software. Every time I'd go to back up a large file, the process would die with an error message.
Before long, I wasn't even able to use the software ! It seemed to decay exponentially. Two weeks ago, I went to do a back up. I click on the desktop icon and I get a "pointer" error. So now, I can't even use the NTI software at all.
Tried re-installing. de-installing. re-installing. rinse. lather. repeat.
The NTI software is totally screwed up.
However, you can use the USB drive without the NTI software. This is what I am currently doing. In fact, the drive works much better without the software !!!! It's both fast and efficient.
This is why I'm giving the product three stars. The three stars is for the hardware. Which does work very well. It's zero stars for the software interface.
"A wonderful, trouble-free accessory" 2008-10-27By
Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States)
This is a nifty little portable HDD which is a perfect accessory for one's notebook computer. Its best attribute is its trouble-free nature. It is powered directly from the USB port, so no clunky power supply to lug around. You just plug it into the USB2 port on your PC, and it powers up and works. True plug-and-play.
No matter how big we get the Hard Drives for our notebooks, they seem to fill up fast. This external hard drive is small enough to carry around with one's notebook, and is perfect for storing large data files, or lots of photographs on a trip or whatnot. The unit is beautifully made, and seems not to have any flaws whatever. Mine has seen light to medium duty for the past year and has worked flawlessly. I take it wherever I take my Notebook computer; it is small and convenient enough for that.
A very nice accessory. Recommended.
