 "Functional and compact" 2009-10-12
By N. Lee (Los Angeles)
The case does it's job. The Western Digital passport and usb cord fit perfectly in there. Trying to put even an additional cord ( i tried putting my ipod usb in) will jam the zipper. But the case itself is not bad looking and makes carrying the Passport around a breeze.

"Perfect fit for WD My Passport, excellent protection" 2009-08-02
By goytabr (São Paulo, Brazil)
Excellent product, even better than I had expected by reading the description and other reviews. It combines the double protection of the hard outer EVA case, which protects against hard, penetrating objects, and a reasonable softer shock-resistant internal layer (about 5 mm or 0.2 inch thick). My Western Digital My Passport Elite fits perfectly in it, without being too loose or too tight (there is a tiny extra space in length, but the fit is so perfect on the sides that the drive won't slide or bounce). The WD My Passport Elite and the Essential are exactly the same size and shape, so this case fits both. The small inner pouch accomodates the USB cable perfectly as well.

This is probably the best choice of protective case for WD My Passport, much better than Amazon's current recommendation for WD My Passport (Case Logic Compact Portable Hard Drive Case). Not only is that other case more expensive, but its reviewers complain that it's too large for My Passport (though good for the older and slightly larger Passport line) and the drive moves and bounces inside it.

Highly recommended! I'm very much satisfied, and since I just bought a second My Passport, I ordered a second case of this model as well.

UPDATE (Aug. 17, 2009): The second case I ordered arrived today. It has two elastic straps to further hold and protect the drive inside - the first one I got didn't have them. While the protection was already great without the straps, and I don't think they were really necessary (at least for My Passport HDDs, which are a near-perfect fit), I think that if anyone still had any doubt about how protective this case is, one can be 110% confident now.

 "That's a good stuff" 2009-04-16

This case is very good. It fits exactly with WD my passport and deliver a good protection to it. It also brings planty of room for the USB cable and you earn an extra space for some flash cards.

 "Caution" 2009-11-24
By Ed Phx. (Phoenix, AZ USA)
I purchased this p.o.s with the hopes of backing up my laptop files. Well, It backs them up alright. 6.05 gig in at least 12 hours.WD was no help at all. There response was "Maybe it takes that long".Try the cable without the stand. You must be kidding if this is there idea of product support. WD has some serious issues with there support team. Wd My Passport Delete. It doesn't matter what color they are all the same.

 "Excellent drive" 2009-11-16
By Renjan Bhasi (Lafayette, IN, USA)
I got this item shipped within 2 days after ordering. The drive is really cool, small and compact for a 500GB drive. The software for installation is fine, I didn't get any problem and I could start transferring my files immediately. The speed of transfer is also good. It took just 45 sec to transfer a movie of 2GB size. I got what I was looking for.

"Poor marketing communications for a potentially good product" 2009-11-14
By Jack
WD is doing a terrible job in marketing the new Passport drives. Things they leave people guessing which should be better communicated:

1. The drive to cable interface is micro-USB, NOT proprietary. This means I can use the cable from my Nokia cell phone and vice versa.

2. The firmware prevents you from deleting factory loaded contents, but later WD issued a firmware update to allow it. One star off for the irritation.

3. The drive IS really much smaller than before. There should be a side-by-side pictorial. This is because the HDD circuit board has USB on-board. Less space, power, reliability, and performance costs than traditional SATA drives with added USB-SATA interface adapter. Minor consequence is being unable to use it internally as a notebook PC drive.

4. 3 year warranty. I'm not sure if this is 3-year drive/1-year other components warranty or full warranty. Seagate disguises their 1 year warranty as a 5-year by charging you for "non-drive" defects after the first year (5-years on the drive/1-year on all components other than the drive).

I wonder what becomes of the tons of returned drives WD/Seagate seems to get recently? From a consumer's point of view, this year's external drive products make little sense.

 "Some serious issues here..." 2009-11-11
By G. Harris (Loveland, CO, USA)
Well it works, but...

1) The connector, it's a flimsy proprietary-to-usb cable, can't use any other Mini-USB cable for example. Also the slightest nudge and it disconnects, I've hurt myself now a few times with this...

2) Why do they need 569MB for Drivers and software? Just give me the drive rather than make me reformat this...

3) Speed, seems slower than many other drives I've had...

In short I wish I'd bought another drive...

 "Crashes Mac Snow Leopard" 2009-09-25
By Turtle (San Francisco, CA United States)
Buffalo has given no timeline for when they will release new software for this drive, but it crashes Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) when you try to use the security unlock software. Other users are reporting the same issue on the Buffalo user forum.

Also, the way the USB plugs into the drive, it can easily get tweaked. I had the drive in my bag and the plug is now bent. I am worried that it's going to just give out one of these days.

Going to just move my data off it and look for something better.

 "Great security and value" 2009-09-14
By Sheng F. (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I got this from Amazon.com, it's a great deal. Very portable and light. The hard drive has encryption software built in. There is also another usb cable just in case the hard drive needs more power to boot. This is MADE IN JAPAN, I don't even need to worry about the quality of this product.

"Drive failed after 6 months, no tech support" 2009-09-01
By Martin G. Nystrom (Mebane, NC USA)
I bought this product for TimeMachine backups, and it worked great...until it started failing just 6 months after purchasing. I was reluctant to send it back to Buffalo for RMA since it had my backup data on it, and I couldn't erase a bad drive. But it didn't matter, because Buffalo tech support never answered the phone to help me. I gave up trying to RMA the drive, but I won't be buying another Buffalo product again any time soon.

"Extremely Disappointed - Hassle to work with." 2009-07-04
By Jesse Baynard (Tampa, FL)
When you plug this drive in, it appears as a CD. If you are using XP or later (which is everyone), you have to figure out what to click on (the documentation is online or on the drive, but not in the box). If you click on the obvious looking "menu" program you will get a lot of utilities that you don't need and won't open the drive up. If you get lucky enough to click "login.exe" and read the fine print that was included in the box to know the default password is 12345... then you can use the drive! Until you reboot, logoff, replugin the drive, or any other number of reasons. Then it's back to the beginning... My Computer... Some CD drive... login... 12345... and presto. So easy... right? Um, no.

If you want to have this as a full time drive it sure isn't easy. You can't remove this feature (or even have a password less that 4 characters) on a PC (for some reason you can on a Mac) either. You have to live with it... Or return it like I did.

Okay... so there is the business case where you want you data hardware encrypted in case you lose it... But surely there's a better way than this convoluted process (like remember this PC... since you already authenticated onto it), or at least an option for no encryption.

 "Sweet little drive" 2009-02-11
By Kaleberg (Port Angeles, WA United States)
This is a sweet little USB powered, data encrypted 320GB hard drive. I have no idea of how long it is going to last, but so far I have been impressed. It works nicely with my MacBook Pro. I plugged in the drive, opened up the virtual CD that appeared on my desktop, and installed the secure driver software. I set up a password, and now I have a Time Machine backup for my computer in a small package, and with no fussing about with a power cable. The USB cable even wraps around the drive for storage. Even better, the drive is encrypted, so that is one less thing I have to worry about. This seems to be a great backup solution.

 "Partition problems" 2009-11-27
By Alejandro (Portland, OR USA)
I had this drive for about 10 days and it already failed twice. I used the SeaGate website FAQ to find a solution and the SeaTools to diagnose it.

Both times the partition was corrupted and had to reformat it, losing all the files stored.

This drive is not dependable to keep it as a backup.

I am sending it back

I would give it 0 stars but that is not possible....

I bought a new laptop and didn't want to slow it down by downloading a bunch of software of music or videos. So, I purchased this product. When it arrived I plugged it in and transferred all of my iTunes music and videos immediately. I also put Rosetta Stone onto it. There was a constant humming sound but I didn't think much of it - assumed it was just working. I left it plugged in and put the computer on the table. I came back about a week later and tried to access my song files. No go. The computer would no longer even acknowledge that the Seagate FreeAgent was attached. I shut it all down, unplugged the Seagate, waited and then restarted everything...No go. I put the Seagate on a second computer - nothing. I tried a third computer - Nothing. I no longer have access to any of my files. All iTunes downloades are permanently locked away and cannot be accessed. Luckily Rosetta Stone had CDs but as for any other files, they're gone forever.

I tried Seagate and was told to retry what I had already tried which obviously did not work. Basically I paid for a black brick. I would not put any money towards this product or company again. I can't even begin to replace all that was lost.

 "Look Elsewhere" 2009-11-23
By Richard (Denver, CO USA)
Purchased drive in August, died in October with several thousand digital images which will be costly to recover. A total waste of time and money. And get ready to hire an interpreter if you plan to contact WD "customer service"

"Power supply can be a problem" 2009-11-23
By B. P. Gore (UK)
My power supply blew, and after I researched this it seems this is not a unique occurence. Powers supply is built to be virtually impossible to service - only replace, and is a quite non-standard config so hard to get a replacement other than from WD (which is much more expensive than a generic power supply).

The drive is excellent, but this issue with power supply makes it less attractive.

"DEATHNINJA REVIEW FOR THIS HARD DRIVE" 2009-11-22
By Jacob R. Rogers (IRAQ, APO AE)
Well I will have to say that this Hard drive is a bit Larger then i thought it was going to be, did pay much attention to the listing LOL. but it is perfect small enough, quit, fast, and it has a small light on it not just enough to be able to give off light but not keep me awake at nigh. this is important because im in Iraq and need my sleep hope you guys like the review and buy as well good price overall. I will tell you if it breaks it is better then getting a 320GB for 99.99 bucks here you know.

"1TB External Hard Drive WD" 2009-11-22
By Travis (Kentucky, USA)
I'm very satisfied with this so far, had it some time now with no issues.

Plug and play without a hitch on Windows Vista, I have also booted my computer into various flavors of Linux and was able to access the drive no problem. I have it set up as a shared drive and all the computers on the home network can access it provided the host computer is running.

It does have a power brick to plug into the wall, not an issue for me since I don't plan on moving it much. It appears very sturdy, the rubber end caps give it a tough look. I use it in a dusty environment and it has not given me any trouble to date. Not a lot of places for dust to get in, a vent in front and back for air to pass through, the top and bottom being solid.

It does not appear to be made for standing on edge, it sits flat on the table. It did not come with a stand, but if you for some reason want it on edge propping it up will be required.

Only thing I don't like is the blue LED activity indicator is on the back where the USB and power cables connect, so it's out of sight. I'd rather that light be on the front so I can see it, but it's not a big issue for me. It is not loud but does crackle and whine when in use. When idle running it can not be heard at all.

Speed is good, I rarely send anything more than a GB or two, and it seems to be able to transfer it in a reasonable amount of time. I use it to back up photos and files from my computers to save local drive disk space.

Overall it does what I got it for and you hardly know it's there. I dump everything I can onto it and have only used 44GB so far, which is barely a drop in the bucket to what it can hold.

 "Epic Fail" 2009-11-22
By Gregory (Leesburg, VA)
After using this for about 3 months access became intermittent. I was at work, having just promised a customer that I would have a cd of their photo restoration burned for them in a few minutes and blam! Access Denied! Fortunately I did have the drive recently backed up at my home office so the data was not totally lost and the customer's request was only delayed, not impossible to meet. Later I took the thing apart and connected the actual hd to my computer using an old Western Digital portable enclosure and that worked just fine. The chasis is very well constructed but the integral cable is a seriously weak link. It's too short and obviously prone to breakage. I might concicer buying another if it just had a simple plug-in cord, but never again with the current cord configuration.

"DO NOT BUY - LOSES ALL DATA" 2009-11-10

R U kidding? In this day and age to lose data is unconscienable. Consumers need to band together and make sure these manufacturers stop selling junk!

"Stopped working after 2 weeks!!" 2009-11-09
By CJG (Minnesota)
Loved this at first, but shortly after I put all my back-up files on the drive, it stopped working. I tried three different computers and none of them can see the drive.

 "Do NOT buy!" 2009-10-20
By M. Kim (Los Angeles, CA)
As with Kika5, I cannot access the drive. Kika5 was lucky in that the drive worked for 3 weeks! Mine only worked for 1 day, and then it died. Please see my comment to Kika5, but basically, no one can access the drive, it's defective, and therefore I cannot access my data. It was a backup, but there are personal things on this drive. I am tempted to just destroy it and throw away, but this is a total waste of $82. If I could rate it lower than 1 star, I would rate it -10!!

 "so far so good" 2009-11-18
By L. Razoumov
I bought couple of Seagate Go 320GB external USB hard drives over last 6 months and so far they work fine under Linux and Mac OS X. Write speeds are between 5 and 10MBytes/sec and it suffices for my needs. So far had no problems with them. On a negative side, USB socket on the drive is a bit flimsy. If one plugs USB cable in and out very often it potentially could become loose. But it did not happen to me yet.
