 "All my files everywhere!" 2009-09-09
By R. Suarez Giacoman (Mc Allen, Texas United States)
I originally purchased this external hard drive as an alternate place to store my laptop's date from its HD. Well, after seeing how great and handy it is to have all my files in it to be taken anywhere I have not stopped using this!

For starters, this drive does not require to be connected to an external power outlet, it is powered via USB 2.0 (I have used external CD/DVD writers that use external power outlets so I know how annoying that can be) It is small and light which makes it easy to carry everywhere. I have all my music there so I can synchronize it to my Ipod in my office PC without using any hard drive of it. Movies, photos, videos, music everything can be stored there to be used in any computer with a USB slot available, I barely use blank DVDs anymore. The best functionality to me: the drive is PS3 friendly, so I have access to all my files from the console, instead of watching videos on the laptop I can now do it on my home theater system!

Once I plugged it to my laptop there was no additional install required other than the automatic install every USB drive runs to be recognized by Windows (I am using it with Windows XP) I have not used the backup software included, that is supposed to synchronize with folders in your computer and back them up so there's not much I can tell about that.

The read times are quick and it is not noisy at all, which are complains friends have on other models they have used. I have had it for over a year now and it has never given me any trouble, I would not hesitate to recommend this.

"2nd WD passport drive fails" 2009-07-25
By Jeannette E. Miller
I've purchased 2 WD Passport drives and both failed to work after about a year of light use (once or twice per month). They spin for 2 seconds then stop and then again and again the same thing. They also get very hot and sometimes have trouble stop spinning so they can be ejected. The product is cheap, but I'd rather spend more money for something that won't quit on me. Not durable at all. I carry them around sometimes and am very careful - this might have hurt their performance, but doesn't portable mean that you can carry them between work and home? Isn't this the point? DO NOT BUY!

"great, reliable drive after 1.25 years" 2009-05-27
By 88a24f49 (US)
I got this drive 15 months ago, and have been using it primarily for twice-weekly automatic rdiff backups (which involve intensive reading and writing). Absolutely no problems that I know of yet. Rock solid and reliable.

The form factor is also nice - it can fit into pretty much any nook.

The length of the tiny USB cable it comes with is a bit obnoxious, but mine just lives on top of my mid-tower case, so it's not an issue (and not worth knocking any stars off, imho)

"WD Passport w/ Sync not a true backup device." 2009-01-18
By Don Grasser
WARNING: Do not think that the your WD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a backup drive; it is NOT !As per the documentation with this device:"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe orerase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, ratherthan a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".

"Horrible Product and Customer Serivce. My 500G Passport Broke down after 5 days." 2009-01-08
By BIG FAN
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING from Western Digital. Unreliable and they have the horrible customer service. I bought a hard drive (500G) from them that broke down after 5 days. They told me that it wasn't their fault and refused to help. HORRIBLE experience. I lost 500 gigs of data.
